Middle school winter sports have been canceled. Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri announced the decision at the Nov. 12 KPS Board of Education meeting. The decision is not related to the recent Michigan Department of Health and Human Services emergency order pausing high school winter sports.
KPS made the decision due to several challenges at the middle schools:
1. Human capital. Currently, three middle schools are without athletic directors. High schools have additional coaches and athletic administration support that our middle schools do not have.
2. Facilities. There is only one gym in each middle school. With both A teams and B teams having to practice after school and with COVID, staff would require additional time to clean between practices. This would extend practices late into the evening.
3. Transportation. Transportation could be challenging for families. Middle school students cannot drive themselves to practice, and because of COVID-19 restrictions, parents would not be able to wait inside school buildings during practice. Getting students to and from practice would be challenging and inconvenient.
The district realizes that not having middle school sports yet this school year has been a disappointment. The district hopes to be able to allow spring sports.
