Interim Superintendent Cindy Green

  • Cindy GreenInterim Superintendent Cindy Green retired from Kalamazoo Public Schools in June of 2021 after 36 years with the district. She returned to KPS in December 2022 to take on the role of interim superintendent. 

    Green grew up in Battle Creek and moved to Kalamazoo to attend Western Michigan University to study education, which has been her lifelong passion. After graduating from WMU, she began working in adult education with students who had developmental disabilities, and was eventually hired as a special education teacher in 1984. 

    She eventually moved into administration, first, as an assistant principal at Kalamazoo’s Woods Lake Elementary, then becoming supervisor of special education for Gull Lake Schools. 

    In 1999, she returned to KPS where she worked as director of special education, assistant superintendent for student services, and assistant superintendent of teaching and learning services. 

    After her retirement in June 2021, she served as interim superintendent for Battle Creek's Lakeview School District, her alma mater, from November 2021 through June 2022.

The Role of the Superintendent

  • A board of education and a superintendent have distinct and separate roles. Together they form the district’s leadership team.

    As CEO of the school district, the superintendent is responsible for:

    • Implementing policy set by the board

    • Making recommendations to the board based on his/her best educational knowledge regarding personnel, curriculum, and budget

    • Informing the board of all vital matters pertaining to the school district

    • Developing and maintaining an efficient and effective management system for the school district

    • Delegating appropriate responsibilities and assigning duties to other employees of the district, but ultimately being accountable for their actions

    • Recommending all candidates for employment and being directly and indirectly responsible for their administrations

    • Developing and improving instructional programming of the school district, including being alert to advances and improvements in educational programming 

    • Preparing and submitting a preliminary budget to the board and managing the financial operations of the school district
