School Closings

School Closure Decision and Notification Process

KPS works diligently to ensure that school closings are made appropriately and in a timely manner. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide significant notice in every situation – sometimes the weather will be unexpectedly worse than predicted. We appreciate your understanding and patience during these times.

When there is inclement weather, starting at approximately 2:30 a.m. the transportation staff performs road checks and makes sure that the school parking lots are or can be cleared in time for school. KPS monitors all weather channels and radar, and consults with other local school districts when making the decision to close schools.

Once it has been determined that school will need to be delayed or closed, the notification process begins. Every effort is made to make the decision to delay or close as early as possible and when possible, the decision could be made the evening before if the weather forecast is positive for inclement weather.

Families should be familiar with the communication channels and procedures used during inclement weather. Be ready to receive weather related cancellations:

  • Keep your phone number and email address updated with the school.

  • Visit the school and district websites.

  • Following KPS on social media (Facebook and Twitter).

  • Look for a push notification from the KPS mobile app. (Download from the App Store or Google Play)

  • Check local television and radio stations for closing announcements.

Michigan winters are unpredictable. Families should have a plan for your child's care in case of a school closing due to inclement weather or lack of power.
