Safety and Security logo

The safety of KPS students and staff is our top priority. You send your children to us every day with the expectation that we not only teach them, but keep them safe. This is a trust that the KPS does not take lightly.

Kalamazoo Public Schools strives to provide a safe learning environment for all students, staff and visitors to our properties and events.

KPS has comprehensive safety and emergency plans for every building, and all schools regularly conduct various drills. We emphasize a collaborative approach to safety and security. Relationships with students and families are our greatest security resource. We all play a role in maintaining a safe environment, and when students feel secure to report what they see and hear, they are more likely to do so. In addition, KPS works closely with local law enforcement.

Campus Safety

KPS has two full-time school resource officers (SROs). An officer from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) is assigned to Loy Norrix High School and an officer from Kalamazoo Township Police Department (KTPD) is assigned to Kalamazoo Central High School. Each secondary school also has campus safety personnel.

The Safety and Security office is located at the Community Education Center (CEC), 600 W. Vine Street.
