Chenery Auditorium, located in the “old” Kalamazoo Central High School just south of downtown Kalamazoo, was dedicated in 1924 making it the oldest auditorium in the area. Each season offers a variety of programs featuring local groups such as the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, Kalamazoo Concert Band, the Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Arts Ensemble, Kalamazoo Children’s Chorus, and many others. Chenery hosts middle school and elementary concerts, as well as performances sponsored by Education For the Arts.

Chenery Auditorium serves the diverse needs of dozens of area organizations for talent shows, theatre, comedy nights, recitals, lectures, travelogues, and music and dance performances. From its inception in the 1920s, the auditorium has been a venue for big band concerts and touring symphonies. The Friends of Chenery, a group of citizen volunteers, helped raise $7.2 to renovate and restore the beautiful landmark. This Mlive/Kalamazoo Gazette article details the renovation, which was completed in April 2010. In May 2011, during National Preservation Month, the Kalamazoo Historic Preservation Commission recognized the rehabilitation of Chenery Auditorium in the category of commercial/institutional/government property.
