Bilingual Program Celebrates Literacy

Families Encouraged to Read This Summer

Summer literacy is key to school literacy.

Kalamazoo Public Schools Bilingual Education/English As a Second Language Program reinforced that idea with the annual Kick-Off to Summer Literacy Celebration at Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts on Wednesday.

The event included parent sessions on the importance of summer reading, information on how to sign up for a library card, student performances from dozens of bilingual students, dinner and a raffle.

Families were able to visit book rooms to select books for the summer before enjoying a student talent show and dinner.

The goal for the evening was to encourage families to read for 20 to 30 minutes a day during summer vacation. Parents were asked to read the books they selected that night and for parents to listen to their children read, so reading becomes a fun family event.

Parents were encouraged to take advantage of the Kalamazoo Public Library Summer Reading Program, which includes prizes for achieving reading goals, as well as special programs and events.
