Families Celebrate Literacy Night

Literacy Night Showcases the Joy of Reading

Families came out to celebrate the joy of reading when Kalamazoo Public Schools elementary buildings held their annual literacy night events on March 1.

Some events included special guests such as author Sonya Bernard-Hollins reading from her children’s book at The Woodward School for Technology and Research, and the district’s Chef Shaun Robinson whipping up fruit smoothies at Washington Writers’ Academy.

But mostly, literacy night was an opportunity for families to participate in hands-on activities, and learn how literacy interacts with the arts, impacts career choices, and helps you learn about the world around you.

Schools offered entertainment, books, and dinner. Kalamazoo Public Library had representatives at each school to help people sign up for library cards.

Literacy night traditionally marks the anniversary of the birth of children’s book author Dr. Seuss, who was born March 2.
