KPS Sets Up Emergency Food Services

'Grab and Go" Meals Extended to End of June

Kalamazoo Public Schools will set up an emergency food distribution system to provide breakfast and lunch for children within the district during the state-mandated school closure.

On Thursday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ordered the closure of all K-12 school buildings in Michigan in an attempt to slow the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Food will be distributed at 20 schools and four community sites. The program began March 16. It will run through Friday, June 26. KPS then will institute some form of its Summer Meal Service after July 6.

The Memorial Day weekend schedule will be modified. There will be no meal pick up on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25. Instead, three days of meals will be given out on Wednesday, May 20, and four days of food will be distributed on Friday, May 22. This will provide food to cover the holiday weekend, and still allow the food service workers to take a needed break.

Seven days worth of breakfasts and lunches will be distributed to students over three days each week in a “grab and go” format, where students will pick up food to eat at home.

Students will receive two days of meals on Mondays and Wednesdays, and three days of meals on Fridays. Food distribution points will be near a parked school bus at school sites and at a KPS food service van at other locations.

The meals are free to all children 18 years of age and younger and to persons up to age 26, who are enrolled in an educational program for the mentally or physically disabled that is recognized by a state or local public education agency. No application or proof of income is required.

KPS Teaching and Learning Services is creating education packets that can be distributed to students who visit the food sites.

KPS was aware that the school closures were necessary to help protect the health of students, families, and staff in the district, but the district was also aware that many students rely on the district’s breakfast and lunch program for food each day. More than one-third of KPS children live in households below the federal poverty line, and approximatelly 70 percent of students are eligible for free- or reduced-price lunch.
