Facilities Projects Completed

Kalamazoo Public Schools Completed Projects from 2010 and 2013 Bonds

Kalamazoo Public Schools facilities department had a busy summer completing projects associated with the 2010 and 2013 bonds.

Deputy Superintendent Gary Start presented a report on facilities to the Board of Education on Sept. 29.

This summer, 42 projects at eight sites were completed. Some of the projects included interior and exterior doors, flooring, interior and exterior lighting, restrooms, public address systems, casework, fire alarms, electrical system replacement, technology infrastructure installations; and various other site improvements. The budgeted total for these projects was $13,643,268. All projects were completed on schedule and were were within budget, Start said.

As with all KPS projects, the construction and remodeling of Milwood Elementary included the use of energy-efficient design and products. This project is anticipated to result in approximately $35,000 in Consumers Energy rebates. In addition, it is anticipated that this project will result in an annual cost avoidance of approximately $37,000.

Planning and design continues for next summer’s projects. Construction will take place at five sites: Woods Lake Elementary: A Magnet Center for the Arts, HIllside and Milwood middle schools, and Phoenix and Loy Norrix high schools.

“Success is possible only through the teamwork and dedicated efforts of everyone involved,” Start said. He thanked a number of people for their work to bring the projects to successful completion including Tower Pinkster, CSM Group, and the Skillman Corporation, as well as as administrators, teachers and staff in various departments, especially Karen Jackson and Al Tyler in facilities.

“The biggest thank you of all goes to the taxpayers of this community,” he said. “Your continual support for the students of Kalamazoo Public Schools makes these improvements possible.”
