MI CareerQuest Introduces Jobs
Annual Event Targets Middle School Students
More than 2,500 Kalamazoo County eighth graders — including students from Hillside Middle School — took part in MiCareerQuest Southwest in November at the Kalamazoo County Expo Center and Fairgrounds.
Eighty-five businesses participated in the event, including: Bronson Healthcare Group, CSM Group, Flowserve, Graphic Packaging International, Humphrey Products, Kalsec Inc., Landscape Forms, National Flavors LLC, Pfizer Inc., Republic Airline, Schupan & Sons Inc., SMART Local 7 Union, United 4 Change, and Western Michigan University College of Aviation.
This was the third year for MiCareerQuest. Students explored various careers through hands-on activities, which ranged from making smoothies to pretending to examine injured animals to learning how to lay bricks.
The businesses were organized into four industry groups: arts and communication; business, technology and human services; engineering and manufacturing; and health and natural sciences. The event was expanded to include a community open house and job fair focusing on job opportunities available to 16 to 18 year olds as well as adults. The event was sponsored by Kalamazoo Regional Educational Services Agency, Southwest Michigan First, and Michigan Works! Southwest.
