Nominations Sought for Social Justice Awards

  • The City of Kalamazoo is accepting nominations for the 2021 Dr. Lewis Walker Social Justice Youth Awards. As part of the community-wide MLK Day of Service, awards will be given to Kalamazoo area students, ages 12-19. Winners will have demonstrated achievements in racial justice, community service, volunteerism, and leadership. Winners will receive a community service award, a monetary award, and a one-year membership to the NAACP. Winners will be celebrated during the Jan. 19 City Commission meeting. Nomination deadline is 5 p.m. Nov. 30. Nomination forms can be found at or in the City Manager’s Office in City Hall. If you need assistance, call (269) 337-8047.

  • Meal package distribution will continue at 23 sites on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 14 school and four non-school sites will provide grab-and-go meal packs from 11:30-12:30. In response to parent requests, five sites will have extended hours, 11:30-1:30. The extended hours sites are Hillside, Kalamazoo Central, Linden Grove, Milwood Magnet, and Northeastern.
