Congratulations to fifth grader Clara Mervak, who was named champion of the first Kalamazoo County Regional Spelling Bee held March 4 at Chenery Auditorium. Her winning word was cyclone.
The event was hosted by Discover Kalamazoo, The Kalamazoo Promise, Kalamazoo Community Foundation, Warner Norcross + Judd LLP, and KELC Events. There were 31 contestant spellers representing 15 Kalamazoo Public Schools.
Clara will be representing Kalamazoo County in the national Scripp’s Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland, during Memorial Day Weekend, 2023.
A big congratulations to first runner-up was Jean-Pierre Van Der Westhuizen, an eighth grader at Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts and Northglade alum!
