School Improvement Team (SIT): The SIT is a group of educators and parent volunteers whose purpose is to analyze state test results and scores within our school in order to determine where greater emphasis is needed. The name is not meant to imply that improvement is needed but rather greater focus may be needed in a certain subject area to better the test results for the school as a whole. SIT meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the school's library. All are welcome.

Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO): The PTO meets every third Tuesday of the month, and childcare is free! We are a group of parents and teachers who gather together for a common cause: our kids. Anyone with a child at Parkwood Upjohn can participate any time. We are volunteers. We do what we can, when we can. There are no qualifications to join. We have a lot of fun, we bridge the gap between parents and educators, and we raise money for the school. If your schedule does not allow consistent involvement, please catch up with us by reviewing monthly meeting minutes.

PTO Officers for 2011-2012:
Meredith Keck, Co-President
Beth Scheele, Co-President
Molly Pawloski, Co-Vice President
Kate Whiting, Co-Vice President
Tammy Ayriss, Secretary
January Haulenbeek, Treasurer

The PTO website is: http://parkwoodupjohnpto.com/.  This website has any form that has come home and has all events that are up & coming till the end of the year.

PURRS Slips: Students of Parkwood Upjohn are rewarded daily with PURRS slips. These are blue pieces of paper that represent our expectations of being respectful, responsible and safe. PURRS is an acronym of Parkwood Upjohn Respectful Responsible Safe! Every time a student gets a PURRS slip they have the option of putting it in the weekly drawing for free ice cream. The names are randomly drawn by the principal every Friday morning and winners are announced on the PA system.

Student Registration: The student registration is our contact with you, and our way of identifying your student. If you have special information for us regarding custody, sitter information, visitation, or any other instructions, it must be noted with the student registration. If there are legal issues involving your student, we must have copies of court orders to make sure that your child is protected. When you have a change of address, sitter, or phone number, please notify the office promptly so that your information can be kept current. We use the student registration phone numbers if your child is ill or injured. Please give us all home, cell, and work phone numbers.

Child Pick Up and Drop Off, and Release of Students: Students driven to school may be dropped off at the corner of Inkster Street and S. Park Street near Mr. Davis, the crossing guard, or by driving into the parking lot at the north end of the building. Please do not park in the bus lane located in the front of the building on S. Park Street. Police will ticket, so observe all ‘no parking’ signs.

Please list all authorized adults who may pick up your child on the registration form. You may list as many friends, neighbors, and family members as you want. You may even ask for more paper! We will check their I.D. For the safety of your child we will not release students to anyone who is not on your registration.

At the end of the day students that are regularly picked up in cars will be kept inside the building in the dining room by Tremont Street. Parents or Guardians may pull through the open gates by the dumpsters, park, and come in through those doors. Please do not block traffic. If an adult who is not familiar to staff comes to pick up your child we will ask that the person go to the main office and show picture identification. Students will only be released to people whose names are on the child’s registration form, and who have ID.

If your child normally rides the bus, but will be picked up by you, please send a written note to the teacher. DO NOT JUST TELL YOUR CHILD YOU WILL PICK THEM UP. When the teacher is in doubt, and there is not a note, we may put your child on the bus because of lack of clear communication. DO NOT PHONE to give permission for your child to ride with someone not on your registration. This is for your child’s safety. Always send a note with your signature if a child has some different than normal arrangement for that day.

When your child needs to leave school during the school day for any reason, you must come to the office and sign him or her out. Do not go directly to the classroom. The office will call your student from the classroom after we have verified identification. If your student is returning the same day, it is necessary to sign your student back in.

Visitors, Guests, and Security: Parkwood-Upjohn welcomes families and community members to visit our building, and to volunteer their time. All visitors to the building are required to sign in at the office and to receive a visitor badge. Your cooperation is requested for the safety and security of all our students.

Attendance: It is the law in the State of Michigan and the policy of the Kalamazoo Public Schools that your child is in attendance and on time every day. Please understand that an educational neglect petition can be filed with the 9th Judicial Circuit Court (family court) if your child is not in school and on time consistently. We do realize that some absences cannot be avoided. However regular attendance is very important to your child’s success.

Medication Policy: Students are not allowed to carry prescription or over-the-counter medications (including cold medicine, cough drops, aspirin, etc.) in school or on the bus. In the event that your student should need medication during the school day, please follow these guidelines:

  • A parent or guardian must deliver the medication directly to the school office.

  • The office must have written instructions from the child’s doctor for both prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, with instructions for use.

  • The office must have written permission from the parent or guardian to give the medication as prescribed by the doctor.

  • Prescription medicine must be in the original container and should include the student’s name, name of the medicine, dose, and frequency.

  • Please ask you drug store to put the medication in two containers, one for home and one for school.

School Closings Due to Weather or Emergencies:
Snow Days: Please turn on your TV (channel 3, 8, 17, or 41) or your radio (WKZO-590, WMKI-1360 AM, or WQLR 106.5 FM). You may also check the channel 13 website for school closings. The Superintendent’s office will try to have school closings to the media by 6 a.m.

Delays or Severe Weather: If there is going to be a delay in the starting time, the above stations will announce it. Please DO NOT CALL the Administration Building or Parkwood-Upjohn. In the case of a tornado warning or other severe weather, the students will remain at Parkwood-Upjohn with supervision until it is safe to transport them home. If the parent or guardian would like to pick up their student, they must sign the child out in the main office.

Activity Time: Students have inside activity time when the temperature and/or wind chill are below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, or when it is raining. Our students can expect to have outside activity time any time the temperature is above 20degrees. Please have your student dressed for the weather. This means coat, snow pants, boots, hat, and mittens. If your child is not well enough to go out for recess, she or he is probably not well enough to be in school. We will keep your child in from outdoor activities with a written doctor’s note.

Illness Policies:
Flu/Fever: If your child is running a fever, throwing up, has diarrhea or coughing, please keep them home from school. If the child went to bed with a fever, keep them home the next day. This protects your child from contracting other illnesses, as well as protecting the other students from getting sick.
Chronic conditions: If your child has special medical needs please notify the office.
Lice: If your student has head lice, he or she will be excluded from school until they are checked by the office, and found to be free of head lice.
Ringworm: Must be seen and treated by a doctor for 24 hours before returning to school.

Attendance Information:

  • Students arrive at 8:40 a.m. Tardy bell rings at 8:55 a.m.

  • Students are required to obtain a tardy pass from the office if they arrive after the tardy bell.

  • A half-day absence will be recorded if your child comes to school after 10:30 a.m.
