MARCH IS READING MONTH Kalamazoo Public Schools PARKWOOD/UPJOHN LIBRARY NEWS MARCH 2012 There are many literacy activities happening at Parkwood/Upjohn during the month of March. On the back of this newsletter is a reminder calendar of events. For a more detailed explanation, please refer to the March is Reading Month Calendar that came home with your child last Thursday. You can also find it below, as a pdf document. Students may work to achieve five different certificates. They begin as early as first grade and are awarded their certificates during our fifth grade celebration. The goal is to experience a wide range of literature while demonstrating good comprehension. The certificates are awarded based on requirements listed below and by demonstrating a passing level of comprehension as established by the Accelerated Reader Program. The certificates are: The John Newbery Award Certificate. Established in 1922, the John Newbery Medal is presented annu-ally to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in the United States in the preceding year. To earn this certificate a student must have read at least five books receiving the Newbery Award or Newbery Honor. Multi-Genre Award Certificate. To earn this award a student must read a variety of subjects in the follow-ing genres: Biography, History, Geography, Natural Science, Historical Fiction, History, Fantasy, Adventure, and Classic. Certificate of Merit for Completion of Author’s Series/Author’s Collection. To earn this award a stu-dent would read all the works in a series. If a series proves to be exceptionally long, the student would need to read a minimum of five books. To receive the award for author’s collection, a student would need to read all the books written by the author. Coretta Scott King Award Certificate. The Coretta Scott King Award is presented annually to recognize authors and illustrators of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appre-ciation of the “American dream.” To receive this award students must read a minimum of five books that have earned the Coretta Scott King award or honor. Classic Literature Appreciation Award. Is presented for high achievement and interest in classic litera-ture.
