Expectations for First Graders:

As you encourage reading at home, here are some things first graders (and older children) should be able to do. Remember that we expect children to read at least 20-30 minutes every day, 365 days a year! This is how our Kalamazoo Public Schools Strategic Expectations Plan describes first grade readers:

  • Reads aloud using expression, and reacting to the periods and questions marks
  • Uses personal experiences, asks questions, and identifies key ideas and details
  • Recognizes sight words and uses prefixes, suffixes, and context clues to read and understand unknown words.
  • Students read aloud new text with 95% accuracy,
  • Identifies the story’s order of events, problem/solution, and beginning/middle/end
  • Discusses patterns found in informational text and explains how authors and illustrators use features like headings, titles, and captions
  • Uses simple strategies [like rereading] to understand texts

Summer School:

At this time of year we consider who would benefit from attending summer school. We look for these skills and a similar list of math skills. There is still time to get student skills to grade level. We don’t want to leave any child behind.

Stop, Walk, Talk:

Even friends can hurt feelings or bother. If another child bothers here’s what to do:

  • STOP! Look right at them and say ‘stop that’ or ‘cut that out!’ Say STOP just once. If they stop, you handled it.
  • WALK! If STOP doesn’t work you and your friends should turn your backs and calmly walk (not run) away. If the problem stops, you handled it.
  • TALK! Are they still bothering you? Tell an adult and expect help.

It is NEVER okay to chase or hit for any reason. It will just make any problem worse. Review how to ‘Stop Walk Talk’ March 21, 2012.

Special points of interest:

  • March 28, 7 PM - Drum Choir at Chenery
  • March 29 - Spring Break begins. No school until Monday, April 9.
