Curriculum Management Audit Identified Areas in Need of Improvement

Delta Kappa International completed a Curriculum Management Audit of the Kalamazoo Public Schools in May 2008. The audit was recommended by Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice and approved by the Board of Education. A curriculum audit is designed to reveal the extent to which a school district has developed a sound system of curriculum management. When such a system is fully operational, it ensures that student achievement is maximized. Click on the attached file below to view the report.

The following is a quote from the summary of the audit:

'While it is a time of challenge for the Kalamazoo Public Schools, it is also a time of opportunity. Board members, district and building administrators, and teachers have indicated the desire to move the district to the next level and set the standard for high quality educational opportunities for all of its students. Undertaking the curriculum management audit is evidence of such commitment. Future progress will depend, in part, on the district leadership's efforts to address the issues presented in the audit.

It is hoped that this curriculum audit report will provide the stimulus for the Board, the administration, teachers, support staff, parents, and community members to develop a consensual agenda for systemic change and improvement over the next several years. If that process yields the kind of quality and consistency envisioned in the recommendations of the audit, there is every reason to be optimistic about the future of the Kalamazoo Public Schools. As one interviewee stated, "We can be a district that delivers the Promise to the kids." '
