KPS Mathematics

Welcome to the World of Mathematics!

Welcome to Kalamazoo Public Schools mathematics page. Please find published below, information about our K-12 mathematics program and curriculum. Our 17 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 2 high schools, and 2 alternative learning programs are committed to providing a sound mathematics foundation for the students of KPS.

The mathematics department is in various phases of the KPS Curriculum Development Cycle. Throughout the district, there will be teams of staff members evaluating our exisiting mathematics curriculum; examining state and national principles, standards, and benchmarks for mathematics teaching and learning: investigating current research on the teaching and learning of mathematics; and defining the KPS PreK-12 mathematics curriculum for future years.

Geometry Mathematics

Course Grade Level Description

Geometry - 1 Credit

Introduction  to Geometry

In our ever-increasing technological world, a rich study of logic and mathematical proof is fundamental for reasoning and good decision making. The study of Geometry offers students the opportunity to develop skill in reasoning and formal proof. Additionally, it helps students to describe, analyze, and recognize the underlying beauty in the structures that compose our world. Geometric thinking is a powerful tool for understanding and solving both mathematical and applied problems, and offers alternate ways of reasoning mathematically, beyond algebra, including analytical and spatial reasoning.

Grade 6 Mathematics

Course/Grade Level Description

Sixth Grade Mathematics:

Sixth grade mathematics will provide students with an investigative approach to learning and opportunities to utilize interactive problem solving along with motivating everyday situations to learn mathematical concepts. There are five strands of mathematical study which include: Number & Operations, Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, and Data & Probability. Students will also focus on applying technological tools to assist in alternate representations and connections to mathematical concepts. Within the five strands of study, there are eleven subcategories that will enable students to be able to:

    Kindergarten Mathematics

    Course/Grade Level Description

The big ideas for kindergarten children are in the area of numbers. Kindergarten expectations emphasize counting, grouping and ordering numbers. Teachers will emphasize meaning, naming and patterns.

    KPS Mathematics Expectations

    (From Strategic Planning Expectations)

All kindergarten students will be able to…

    • Count, read and write numbers up to 30.

    • Compare and order numbers up to 30.

    • Count orally to 100 by 1; count orally to 30 by 2, 5 and 10.

    • Add and subtract numbers that equal up to 10 using math symbols.

    Best Practices

For each student in our district to become mathematically literate, we believe that the following best practices should be developed throughout the system:

    Mathematics Literacy

Since the development of the KPS Curriculum Framework in 2002, many teachers within the district have helped with the mission to increase student achievement through the disseminatio
