Course/Grade Level Description
Sixth Grade Mathematics:
Sixth grade mathematics will provide students with an investigative approach to learning and opportunities to utilize interactive problem solving along with motivating everyday situations to learn mathematical concepts. There are five strands of mathematical study which include: Number & Operations, Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, and Data & Probability. Students will also focus on applying technological tools to assist in alternate representations and connections to mathematical concepts. Within the five strands of study, there are eleven subcategories that will enable students to be able to:
- Calculate conversions and order values on a number line for fractions, decimals, and percents.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions, decimals, and positive/negative numbers.
- Use and understand the purpose of rates and ratios in real-life situations.
- Solve simple linear functions (y = mx) using tables, equations, and graphs.
- Use verbal models to write expressions and equations with variables.
- Use the Order of Operations to solve one and two-step equations.
- Manipulate 2-dimensional shapes and understand the relationship of angles (interior and exterior).
- Understand congruence and make transformations of figures on a coordinate grid.
- Calculate surface area and volume in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes.
- Understand and calculate the probability of a given situation.
- Convert measurements within U.S. Customary and Metric Systems.
Prerequisite
Successful completion of fifth grade mathematics.
Sixth Grade Mathematics Plus:
This course features content aligned with the Michigan Department of Education’s 6th and 7th grade level content expectations. The course will move at a faster pace and delve deeper into mathematical concepts. It is designed to prepare students for 7th Grade Mathematics Plus and Algebra I in 8th Grade (successful completion of Algebra I meets high school graduation requirements).
Prerequisites:
Students must receive:
- Teacher recommendation
- Mathematics scores of two levels above fifth grade on Performance test
- MEAP mathematics performance level of 1 or 2
- Mathematics scores of two levels above fourth grade on IOWA test
KPS Mathematics Expectations
(From Strategic Planning Expectations)
All sixth grade students will be able to…
- Understand and compute fluently with rational numbers.
- Add and subtract integers and rational numbers; understand the location of integers and rational numbers on the number line.
- Solve applied problems using decimals, percentages, rational numbers and rates.
- Represent simple linear functions (y = mx) using tables, equations and coordinate plane graphs while developing the concept of slope.
- Use variable to write and simplify linear expressions and equations.
- Solve one step equations and simple two step equations while developing the concept of equality.

Michigan Focal Points
The following table outlines the Michigan Focal Points for sixth grade. The language in each Michigan Focal Point correlates in many cases to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards. The first column lists each Michigan Focal Point and the second column specifies grade-level topics linked to the corresponding Focal Point. These are the topics from which the core expectations (2nd – 7th grade) were selected.
